Fraunhofer ITWM-Unit HPC and SharpReflections GmbH manage technology project with Planio
The Fraunhofer Institute for Technology and Industrial Mathematics ITWM is part of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft, the largest European institution for the promotion of applied research. The ITWM deals primarily with mathematical methods. They form the basis for the simulation of technical computer processes.
The portfolio of ITWM includes not only research activities, consulting and support services, but also the development of own software products. The Competence Center High Performance Computing and Visualization CC HPC is a department of the institute. The CC HPC develops innovative HPC solutions for the industry and participates in national and international support programs. Major industrial partners are presently coming from the banking and oil sectors. In addition to the development of parallel applications, the development of HPC tools forms a predominant focal activity. This includes the Global Address Space Programming Interface (GPI) and the Fraunhofer Parallel File System (FhGFS).
Planio is the price-performance winner
The spin-off company SharpReflections GmbH of the Fraunhofer Institute works on the seismic software Pre-StackPRO, together with CC HPC. It soon became clear that a common and unified collaboration platform will be needed for the cooperation of the two partners and other customers. After searching for a suitable tool for online project management, the project leaders eventually chose Planio. The combination of attractive pricing, a wide range of functions and immediate availability were the decisive factors.
„We came across Planio via an Internet search. We compared the price-performance ratio of the project management tool with those of other competitors. In the end, Planio was clearly ahead.”
Cooperation without barriers – with Planio
During project work, the project participants rely on special features of Planio – for example the bug tracker. Software errors are documented and reported quickly and efficiently. They can be transferred as tasks to the responsible project staff. Therewith, responsibilities are always clear and uncertainties can be avoided. A role and rights system controls what every project collaborator can see and edit. Using the wiki, compiled knowledge and project learning are made accessible and expanded constantly. The exchange of documents is managed with the help of the file management. In this way, the project participants will always fall back on current versions.
„We are very pleased with our decision in favour of the online platform. In addition, the Planio team successively expands the capabilities of the project management tools. For this reason, the future with Planio is very promising.”
